The MARTIN / MARTAIN / MARTYN Surname DNA Project (hereafter called MARTIN) was officially begun on July 24, 2002, by Kay Martin, when she registered with FamilyTreeDNA.com to form the Martin Group and obtained the discounted rate for each individual who wished to join the Project and be DNA tested. Kay's interest was in the Virginia Martin lines and in finding how they related to her Martin family. However, seeing a need for all Martin researchers to help to advance their genealogy research and, in many cases their having run out of documents needed to prove their lines, and the wish to prove that their research was correct, Kay opened the Martin DNA Project to all Martin surname researchers who have a male representive to submit the Y-DNA sample.
The success of our Project will depend on the number of participants who join our testing group, as well the documentation of the research connected with each line reqarding dates and locations of birth, death, marriage, etc. Please, contact as many MARTIN / MARTAIN / MARTYN researchers as you can to encourage their participation in our Project to help to ensure its success. The testing will be for the Male Y-chromosome that is passed, only, from father to son. Therefore, the testing requires a Male with the surname of MARTIN, MARTAIN or MARTYN and who is a direct male descendant of your earliest Martin ancestor. We have chosen Family Tree DNA of Houston, TX as our testing company. They are leaders in their field and are associated with Dr. Michael Hammer, Ph.D., Geneticist, associate research scientist in the Division of Biotechnology at the University of Arizona. The testing laboratory will be analyzing either the 12, 25 or 37 markers on the Y-chromosome. If the markers of two or more male individuals match, it will indicate they descend from a common male MARTIN / MARTAIN / MARTYN ancestor. It will not identify the specific ancestor. It is our opinion that the 25 and 37 marker tests are much better at reporting the kind of data that we need to determine that we are related, than the 12 marker test which can find many matches that are not close in generations to most genealogy research. However, which test to order, is a personal decision. If you choose the 12 marker test, you can upgrade from the 12 marker to the 25 or 37 marker test at a later date if desired, although, the cost is a bit more and causes several weeks delay in obtaining the final results. To join our Martin Group, click on "Join the DNA Project" in the left hand column. And to help answer your questions, we have a list to take you to FamilyTreeDNA.com . We require a chart of your MARTIN / MARTAIN / MARTYN family tree down from the earliest known male ancestor to you, the participant. This is to help to identify each line and assign an ID#. No names or dates of living persons will be posted on our Project website. The Co-Administrators of the Martin DNA Project are: Kay Martin, Vicki Cragen and Julia French Wood
