The JARVIS and all variant spellings of the name ( hereafter called Jarvis) Surname Y-chromosome, DNA Project was officially begun on June 26, 2006 by Julia French Wood, when she registered with FamilyTreeDNA.com for our Group and we were given the discounted rate for each individual test. Having read many success stories in matches with DNA for genealogical purposes, she decided that it is time to try to advance our research in the many cases where there are no written documents to help to prove our ancestry.

The Project has, now, been passed to John Jarvis whose JARVIS (all spellings) Project can be found at: New Jarvis DNA Project

It has been very rewarding being a part of this Project and I will continue to monitor it's progress.

The success of the JARVIS Project will depend on the number of participants who join our testing group, as well the documentation of the research connected with each line reqarding dates and locations of birth, death, marriage, etc.

Please, contact as many JARVIS researchers as you can to encourage their participation in our Project to help to ensure its success.

The testing will be for the Male Y-chromosome that is passed, only, from father to son. Therefore, the testing requires a Male with the surname of JARVIS (or variant). This can be any male relative, who is a direct descendant of your JARVIS ancestor, if you are a male whose name is not JARVIS or if you are a female researcher.

We have chosen Family Tree DNA of Houston, TX as our testing company. They are leaders in their field and are associated with Dr. Michael Hammer, Ph.D., Geneticist, associate research scientist in the Division of Biotechnology at the University of Arizona.

The testing laboratory will be analyzing either 25, 37 or 67 markers on the Y-chromosome. If the markers of two or more male individuals match, it will indicate they descend from a common male JARVIS ancestor. It will not identify the specific ancestor. It is neccessary for the matching participants to compare their genealogy research to find where they connect. It is our opinion that the 37 & 67 marker tests, are much better at reporting the kind of data that we need to determine that participants are related, than the 12 (old) or 25 marker test. However, which test to order, is a personal decision. You can upgrade from the 25 marker to the 37 or 67 marker test at a later date if desired, although, the cost is a bit more and causes several weeks delay in obtaining the final results. The test prices are discounted for our surname group and can be seen by clicking at the left on "Join our JARVIS DNA Project"

To join our Group, and to help answer your questions, I have a list to the left to take you to FamilyTreeDNA.com We require a chart of your family down from the earliest known JARVIS ancestor to you, the participant. This is to help to identify each line and assign an ID#. Once you have joined our Jarvis Project, I will send instructions on how to send the Ancestor Tree to me.
