• James Alexander Copeland was born 12 Jan 1817 in GA and died 31 Oct 1883 in DeKalb Co., AL. James had three documented sisters: Nancy (b. ca. 1816, GA) m. John Paden, Jr.; Jane (b. ca. 1819, GA) m. Mercer Nicholson; and Cynthia (b. 01 May 1822, GA) m. Robert Paden. The four siblings are connected to a Samuel and Sarah Copeland of DeKalb Co., AL, who died in 1841 and 1848 respectively. Samuel Copeland was hired as a miller to the Cherokee Nation in 1818 at Oothcaloga Mills (now near Calhoun, Gordon Co., GA) and moved by 1834 to a mill on Wills Creek in what is now DeKalb Co., AL. The exact relationship between Samuel and James is undocumented, although James and the widow Sarah were jointly named as administrators of Samuel's estate. Two other Copelands show up in the estate records, relationship unknown: Jesse Copeland and Joseph Copeland. James Copeland, in the 1880 census, places his father's and mother's birthplaces as SC/NC and his sister Cynthia puts them as NC/NC.
  James Copeland married on 02 Jan 1841 to Nancy Catherine Mackey of Cherokee Co., AL, b. 27 Jul 1818, NC, d. 12 Apr 1901, Wise Co., TX. She was the daughter of John and Mary Mackey. James and Nancy had twelve children, all presumably born in DeKalb Co., AL.
